Medusa & Athena and punishment for being raped

According to Greek Mythology, Medusa, who was once a beautiful woman, was punished by Athena for being the survivor of rape in Athena’s temple. Medusa’s hair was turned to snakes, her fingernails into claws, and anyone who looked into her eyes was turned to stone (I hope that this sounds familiar to the members of the Narnia book club). All for being raped.

As terrible as this sounds, it is unfortunately not limited to Medusa’s story or ancient times, as even today there are societies where women are punished for being raped.

Above are pictures of Medusa and her hair of snakes.

Beautiful Athena — the goddess of reason and intelligence. Were her actions agains Medusa reasonable or intelligent?
