Beautiful Mosaics of Herculaneum

The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but left some beautiful ruins including these colorful mosaics in Herculaneum (OK, so the final one isn’t so colorful).

A mosaic, which we’ll see again in Ravenna, Italy and saw as part of Roman ruins in Cordoba, Spain, is an image or design made up of lots of small tiles. If you’ve been in a subway station in New York City, you’ve seen one. Think about the time and care that went into making these works of art!
